Mr. Svaty was appointed acting Secretary of the Kansas Department of Agriculture by Governor Mark Parkinson in July 2009. Svaty is a fifth generation farmer from
Ellsworth
County
. He farms a diversified operation that includes wheat, milo, soybeans, corn, cattle and sheep.
Prior to his appointment to Secretary, Svaty served as the State Representative of the 108th District in
Kansas
for seven years. He served on the committees for Energy and Utilities, and was the ranking member on the Agriculture and Natural Resources and the joint committee on Energy and Environmental Policy. Svaty has a Bachelors degree in History from
Sterling
College
.
